Too Much Ice in Your Freezer? It May Not Be Broken

You open the freezer to get something...
and notice that the layer of ice inside seems to be getting thicker.
At first, it's only a little.
Eventually, it starts taking up useful storage space.
Does that mean the freezer is broken?
Not necessarily.
Frost can develop for several reasons, including moisture entering the freezer, how frequently the door is opened and whether it closes properly.
1. The Freezer Door Is Opened Frequently
Opening the freezer allows warmer, humid air from outside to enter.
If the door is opened frequently or left open for too long, additional moisture can enter and eventually freeze.
2. Make Sure the Door Closes Properly
Sometimes food packaging, containers or baskets prevent the door from closing completely.
Check that nothing is blocking it.
3. Check the Door Seal
The door seal helps keep outside air from entering the freezer.
If it is dirty, damaged or no longer sealing correctly, frost may develop more easily.
Clean and inspect it according to the manufacturer's instructions.
4. Be Careful With Hot Food
Hot food introduces additional heat and moisture.
Follow safe food-storage practices and your appliance manufacturer's recommendations before placing food into the freezer.
5. Is Your Freezer Overpacked?
A freezer can slowly become packed with meat, seafood, frozen meals and other food.
Apart from making items difficult to find, overcrowding may interfere with the space or airflow required by some freezer designs.
Follow your model's instructions and avoid blocking relevant internal areas.
6. Check the Temperature Setting
Colder isn't automatically better for every situation.
Use an appropriate setting based on your freezer model and food-storage requirements.
When Should Heavy Frost Be Checked?
Some frost can occur during normal use in certain types of freezers.
However, if heavy ice returns very quickly after removal, the door doesn't seal properly, temperature becomes inconsistent or food isn't freezing as expected, arrange an inspection.
Avoid using knives or sharp objects to remove ice because they can damage the appliance.
Maybe Your Freezer Is Simply Too Small
Sometimes the freezer isn't actually the main problem.
Your storage needs have changed.
Maybe you originally stored only a few packs of meat and frozen food.
Now you're buying groceries for an entire week, your family has grown, or you're running a small frozen-food business.
If the freezer is constantly full, a larger or different freezer may make more sense.
